tnr9, if you were close to a child who was prone to an on and off illness and needed extra attention sometimes, would that cause you to blame the child and not accept them? And let's say the child grew up to be a little weird as a teenager, maybe a quiet and emo artist who made only dark purple paintings... and you only like brightly colored art. Does that change how much you care about the kid? You're still talking about conditional love through a lens of self-blame. I also agree with your therapist. Someone being a psychiatrist doesn't make them aware of their own situation, especially if the specialty of practice is something unrelated. Or if they are aware, they may not desire to do the work to change. It doesn't automatically make them right in how they've handled the situation. I hope you feel better soon! I don't tend to get reactions from flu shots most years, luckily, but it is unpleasant when it happens. Rest and stay hydrated today!

....that doesn't fit the experiences from my past, it doesn't fit the dialogue I was told and I have no tools around addressing things differently....so I shut down and go back to what is familiar and feels safe. Also wonder if this might be a really good point to bring up to your therapist. See if your sessions can increase your toolbox in this way.

She had moved to another state and phone interactions were not the same as face to face.

I thought you were because you have mentioned you saw someone for medication that was helping. Have you tried a therapist who specializes in CBT?

The book "Feeling Good" by David Burns is an excellent do-it-yourself guide to CBT
