Honestly..I don't think the text message was the issue...if he really wanted you there, he could have called as well. Personally..and I don't know the situation all that well...something could have come up at his last bible study that he needed time to think over. To me, he sounds conflicted between you and his family and faith. That cannot be an easy place to be in...especially since he grew up in that community. The best thing you can do is simply to let him have time to work through whatever he needs to work through...meanwhile...you may want to take the attachment style test to see what your attachment style is and to read up about that here.
