If the avoidant is the one that creates the distance, then is it just the avoidant that keeps the cycle going?
If so, then that means it all resides in the hand of the anxious to break the cycle IF the avoidant decides to keep returning.
Do I have this right?

I think avoidants distance themselves until they start to feel like they're losing you, then they give you just enough closeness to keep you in. That's why it's a cycle. Get close -> Freak out -> Distance ->Get close -> Freak out and distance etc'. Eventually the cycle is broken by whoever gets tired of it first.
